Salvia commonly known as Salvia Divinorum is a powerful psychedelic plant from the wilds of Mexico. Typically chewed or smoked, Salvia Divinorum is becoming quite the popular little plant with psychonauts the world over.
A History of Salvia
There are many breeds of plants known as Salvia that are commercially available in most garden shops in North America, however, the Salvia that most people think of when the name comes up is Salvia Divinorum.
Salvia Divinorum is a small leafy green plant found primarily in the Mazateca region of Mexico. Sometimes called 'diviner's sage' the plant was traditionally used by indigenous peoples as a healing and divinatory aid due to its unique properties when chewed or smoked. When consumed in this manner, the active ingredient, Salvinorin-A produces psychedelic effects in the body ranging from mild to extreme.
Salvia Divinorum was first discovered in the late 1930's by a group of anthropologists studying medicinal and magical cures in Mexico. During their time in the Mazateca region they observed and cataloged many magical plants and remedies, bringing several back to the States to study. Among their discoveries were the use of morning glory seed, several varieties of mushroom and black nightshade.
The plant was rediscovered in the early 1990's by the global underground psychedelic culture and has seen some use and (in)fame(y) in recent years.
Effects
Salvia is what is normally called a 'strong psychedelic'. When smoked, Salvia has an onset time of about 20 seconds to two minutes. Peak experiences will usually be achieved within this time, but depending on the size of the dose and the individual, peaks can take up to 5 minutes to occur. The primary effects of the drug last anywhere from 5- 15 minutes during which the user goes through a 'psychedelic' experience. Psychedelic experiences can normally include closed and open eye visualizations, time distortion, social dissociation, altered thought patterns, altered behavior, dreamlike/childlike states, increased in sensations, changes in body temperature, senses of fear or panic, increased perspiration, introspection, feelings of presences outside the norm as well as feeling like oe has traveled 'somewhere' or 'somewhen' else. Salvia unlike many psychedelic tends to have a much shorter duration with 'long' trips tending to last a little under an hour, although some after effects may be felt up to an additional hour later.
As with all psychedelics, the effects of Salvia are largely dependant on the dosage, individual and often the environment. Further as Salvinorin-A does not currently appear to have a 'tolerance' effect, multiple uses of the drug can extend or amplify an episode. Always have a sober sitter and know your limits. Further, if you have a history of mental illness in your family, extreme caution should be used.
More Than "A Trip"
I laid back on the floor in an empty room after Sara (my sitter) took the bong. The air began to congeal as I breathed it, and I laughed at the curiousness of the sensation. Very quickly laughter overcame me, and I heard Sara laughing also. I became self-conscious, and worried that Sara might be judging me or my behavior (I have problems with fear of others' judgment), but I could not stop laughing. Sara's laughter and my own began to intermingle and soon I had no control at all; I was being laughed, and quite forcefully. There was no humor or joy of my own in it, just this maniacal laughter spewing forth from me. In a moment I realized that I could, in a sense, navigate by controlling my laughter.
Each time I breathed in and began another Bwaaaa- haaaa haaa haaa, the bwaa was a leap away from herenow in a fourth orthogonal direction that I had never noticed existed before. After the third or fourth bwaa, I realized there was no need to be self conscious, since I had left Sara back in that empty room in an entirely different dimension.
I became further amused by the realization that I had a destination, and that I would arrive on the ninth bwaa. And so it was. I believe after nine bwaas, I sat up suddenly and yelled "OKAY!!" then fell back to the floor, though I have no recollection of that. And Sara wasn't counting my bwaas, either. Regardless, I had arrived at my destination, which was a sort of metaphorical closet, filled with stuffed animals and blankets that were somewhat damp and moldy, but nonetheless comforting.
I rolled around in these warm soft things for a few subjective hours, and then became aware that the closet door was open, just a crack, and an intense yellow light emanated from the other side. Thus began the hazier part of the experience. Several things were happening at the same time, but the sense I had was that I, or that part of me that exists outside the structure of my brain, was being injected into other people's brains. There was a rolodex of brains available, people of vastly different realities, and as the rolodex flipped, I jumped into and out of their neuronal structures. Each was very different, some were alltogether foreign.
There is only one that really persisted in my memory, and that was the brain of a housewife who had a shitload of cleaning to do; I was intensely relieved to jump out of that brain. During this time, I was trying to operate the rolodex by rotating my body with an arm and leg up in the air. I was not breathing well, due to the viscosity of the air and the fact that I was still laughing hysterically, and I began to tire. Subjectively a week might have passed since the experience began (in hindsight), though since I had no memory of the reality I had left behind, I thought that I was in some hyperdimensional limbo state, indeed that I had always been there, and that I could never possibly get any rest, since I could not stay in any one brain for more than a minute.
At this point a certain terror began to rise in me, but at the same time faded, as the effects were wearing off. I opened my eyes and was absolutely flabbergasted to find myself here in this room with Sara sitting in the corner. Of the infinite potentialities, how could I have possibly ended up here? Well, I had been here before, and there was a certain familiarity to it that was somewhat comforting, but I was certain that this was not the same place I had left.
There were subtle differences. There were green blinds drawn over the windows, which had been bare, and there was a clothes hanger and a plastic bag lying on the floor. How did they get there? I grilled Sara over these inconsistencies. Then I became self consious again, worrying that I might have said or done any number of terrible things while I was gone. After some time, Sara convinced me that everything was normal and that I had done nothing but roll around on the floor laughing and making strange noises for a few minutes. I must say that I had read many trip reports, that I have done lots of psychedelics in my day, and that absolutely nothing could ever have prepared me for that experience.
whoa.
You should be aware that salvia suitable for smoking purposes is available in different strengths and forms, for the sake of your own health always get standardized extract when possible. You can find pre-packaged salvia available for purchase here - click here !
Fill a water pipe with cool water and load the bowl with a full hit of Salvia. Light the salvia and inhale as deeply (and hold in as long) as possible.
There are many ways of smoking salvia. You can roll it like smoking a cigarette or smoking marijuanna, you a small metal or creamic hand pipe or you may prefer to relax at home and smoke salvia from a hookah, acrylic bong or glass water bong. We prefer a water pipe. The water pipe will cool the smoke and allow you to inhale more than smoking out of other types of pipes.
While holding in the hit it may be advantageous to poke out the left over ash/foliage and reload the pipe. Upon exhalation take a couple deep breathes of fresh air then inhale a second hit as above.
Before taking another hit you may want to empty the water pipe of the left over smoke from the previous hit since the smoke stales quickly and make the next hit more difficult to inhale and hold for a length of time.
Those who are used to smoking are more likely to feel the effects of salvia simply due to the fact that their lungs are much better prepared to inhale a large amount of smoke.
One technique to use to bring in large volumes of smoke is to take a few deep breathes, exhale all the air in the lungs and then inhale from the water pipe.
One other technique is to continue loading and smoking until you no longer have the coordination to load anymore. I've tried this last technique before and it is really great for open eye visuals.
Most people don't feel anything the first time they try salvia. If you do not get any results after several attempts (you will know for sure if it hits),

Smoking Salvia is a Trendy "New Concept"
Legal Highs And Legal Drugs - Salvia divinorum as an herb can be used quite safely and many people claim that it has proved beneficial to them.
It's probably not like what you expect, even if you have considerable experience with various other drugs. Salvia's effects are radically different from that of any other vision inducing psychoactive substance
Salvia will produce an effect that is unique to itself and only actual experience can help one to understand its nature. Effects vary by dose and method of use. The effects range from very light at lower doses to overwhelmingly strong at higher doses.
The experience can vary from a subtle, just off-baseline state to a full-blown psychedelic experience. At moderate to high doses, users report a sense of profound understanding and peace, a feeling of being connected with the entire universe, vivid imagery, dramatic time distortion, encounters with beings,

This type of product is time consuming to prepare, but is far superior to crude-extract enhanced leaf. Products that have been prepared in this manner have particularly good burning characteristics because they do not contain the tar-like, gummy chemicals found in crude extracts. Since the impurities have been removed during the extraction process, they won't end up in your lungs.
Normal Salvia Leaves are just that, leaves that have been harvested and dried.
High Grade Salvia Leaves come from premium plants, similar to high grade marijuana compared to a standard strain.
- Crude Extract (non-standardized) is prepared by mixing crude salvia extract with Salvia divinorum leaves. This concentrates tars and other harmful components of the leaf. It is usually described by a number followed by an x (such as "5x," "10x," etc). The number indicates the ratio of extract to leaf. For example 'Salvia divinorum 10X Organic Extract', is prepared by mixing one unit of leaf with the tar-like crude extract obtained from nine units of leaf. The resulting product is ten times as potent as the leaves used to produce it.
Standardized Extract is prepared by extracting pure salvinorin A (the active principal of the plant), then adding a measured quantity back onto Salvia divinorum leaves to bring them up to a specific, reliable, and consistent level of potency.
After taking the necessary hits close your eyes, lay your head back on a comfortable support, and get your arms and legs in a comfortable open position that won't require you to move after the effects have begun.
When the effects begin one might have a strong desire to open ones eyes or change ones position to reestablish an equilibrium. It is important that you not do this. Lay perfectly still with eyes closed for the duration.
If you wish to attempt the experiment with eyes open I highly recommend staying still as possible, having no moving objects in sight, and fixing ones eyes upon a motionless object for the duration. The initial peak last for no more than three to five minutes while residual effects may carry on for ten.
With continued usage over time one becomes more adept at both noticing the effects of salvia and at exploring the new landscape. As I continued using salvia I reached a peak experience and now the visions are rather mundane, failing in their once spectacular glory.
The three most important factors in feeling the salvia experience are appropriate silence, lack of movement, and closed eyes. I have found that a lack of dialog, either from other participants, or from TV is of primary importance, but that instrumental music makes for a quite intriguing experience, especially if surround sound speakers are properly placed surrounding ones head.
Since silence is such an integral part of the experience I've conducted sessions with only one person experimenting at a time. The participation of others during ones salvia experience can at times be a hindrance.
If others are present when you are experimenting it is important that they be as quiet as possible, both vocally and in their physical movements (no creaking in chairs or traversing hardwood floors, heavy breathing, or, the hardest thing for an observer to hold back, laughter).
I've always required of other participants/observers that they be completely still so as to cause absolutely no noise. During the experience a new landscape is opened up, one without borders, and space can appear to go on infinitely.
Usually this landscape is one that can shift from one scene to the next without apparent provocation and which resembles a rapid succession of unconscious material forcefully trying to push itself into conscious awareness.
If someone makes a noise or speaks the vision may be lost or altered since the noise, and where it is located in space, can still be comprehended by the conscious and rational mind.
This causes the mind of the experimenter, which can be quite conscious of two realities at once, to become aware of the inconsistency between these realities, and this can, and in my case usually does, disrupt the experience.
What the motionless body allows the mind to do is to slip deeper into the 3 dimensional nature of the vision. If the body is moved the vision will often alter or slip away.
In some way the physical body defines the inner landscapes of the vision. My only way to explain this is to say that the conscious rational mind retains awareness of consensus reality while under the influence of salvia.
Since salvia creates a non-consensus reality body movement causes a dichotomy of awareness which can cause the mind to attempt a reconciliation between these realities. Consensus reality often wins, causing the vision to dissipate, or at least lose its convincing nature.
This sort of dual awareness is also played out with sight, which may be why many who attempt to feel the effects of salvia, and have failed to try closing their eyes, cannot. By having ones eyes open the mind appears to be unconsciously forced to recognize one reality over the next and therefore cannot fall deeply into the full salvia experience.
Of course these forces can be overcome if enough salvia is smoked. Large doses of extracted salvia force reality to the wayside, regardless of surroundings.
The main physical effects that I have noticed are a feeling of a rise of body temperature and a slight tightening of the muscles, especially in the hands. I found that if I consciously focus on relaxing my body during this tensioning that I would be pulled further into the vision. This fits into my theory of dichotomy.
I've also found that after the main effects have worn off short term memory may be slightly impaired. For example, I kept forgetting about my lit cigarette in the ashtray. I would lay it down and then, in what appeared a couple minutes, it would be completely burned down to the filter.
One may also notice an inability to recall many of the aspects of the vision and may suffer from incoherent speech. The incoherent speech is very important in attempting to interpret the experience.
Just as in Freudian dream psychoanalysis the mind make attempts to fill in the blanks of the vision with coherent structure, basically by adding material to make the vision make sense. But the visions in themselves are unconscious material coming up to a conscious level and this is very difficult to fully interpret.
When a participant comes down from the experience with me I remain completely silent, allowing the partaker to speak freely without my interjections or my attempts to make sense of what is being said.
Let them freely speak, without the criticism of the all to common laughter, and try to form a new mental picture from remembered material. Let them have enough quiet time to digest what has happened so that they might come to their own personal understanding.
The main psychological effects seem to be a dissociation from ones physical surroundings. One becomes aware of other surroundings and of communication with alien, though not necessarily extraterrestrial or spiritual, beings.
One of the more interesting factors I have found with salvia is its ability to cause laughter, sometimes even uncontrollably so. Rarely have I seen fear from smoked foliage, but with salvia, I understand it is common.
Of course these are only my own observations and I make no guarantees of the same effects for others. Two last, though not thoroughly tested observations are that marijuana smoked beforehand interferes with the effects of salvia and that the effects of salvia plateau, thereby requiring a rapid succession of h
